Fall 2014 – Intro to Typography – 8 – Typeface Choices

As a designer, good (or bad) design is all about the choices you make. One of the most important decisions you’ll make is what typefaces you will use to produce your headlines, subheadings and body text. Today we will practice making these choices.


Objective:

  • I can select the most appropriate typeface available for a given design scenario.

Assignment:

  1. Connect to the class file server, and download the .pdf document entitled 8 – Typeface Choices 2014.pdf from the Student Pickup Folder.
  2. Create a new InDesign document.
  3. For each project listed, name a font that you would use and type its name in 18 pt type, then change the text to that same font.
  4. Next, in a few complete sentences (12 pt type), explain why you chose that font.
  5. When you have done this for all 20 of the listed projects, save your document and place a copy in the appropriate Student Drop Folder on the class file server.

Fall 2014 – Intro to Typography – 7 – Font Identification

In today’s assignment we will categorize a given font into one of the four major classifications of type.


Objective:

  • I can identify which of the four major categories of typefaces a given font belongs to.

Assignment:

  1. Connect to the class file server, and download the .pdf document entitled 7 – Font Identification 2014-15.pdf from the Student Pickup Folder.
  2. Place this document into a new InDesign document on Layer 1, and lock this layer.
  3. Create a new Layer (Layer 2) and answer the questions on this layer.
  4. For each of the list of 20 fonts provided, look at the font and identify it in the blank on the right. They will all go into one of the four font categories we have studied in class: Serif, Sans Serif, Script or Ornamental/Display.
  5. Turn in the document to the appropriate Student Drop Folder on the class file server when complete.
